One Million International Students Go to College in the USA

The number of international students in the United States of America exceeded one million for the first time in 2015-16, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE). At 1,043,839, the number of international students represents 5.2% of the total U.S. student population.

Of the total, 40.9% are undergraduate students, 36.8% are graduate students, 14.1% participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT) and 8.2% are in non-degree programs.

Except for a slight decrease in 2003-04 and 2004-05, the number of international students in the U.S.A. has increased every year from 1948-49 to the present, as shown in this chart.

The most popular destination states for international students are California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, the same as for domestic students.

China remains the top country of origin, representing almost a third of international students in the U.S.A., followed by India at one-sixth. The students from India are more likely to be graduate students than undergraduate students.

The most popular fields of study are engineering, business, math and computer science.

Two-thirds of international students rely on their own resources and their family as the primary source of funding. The U.S. college or university is the primary source of funding for only one in six international students. Other sources, which include foreign government, current employment, private sponsors and the U.S. government, are identified as the primary source of funding for about one in six international students.
